I was asked if i would be down to help build the first skatepark in East Africa – Nairobi, Kenya for a project called Shangilia, with the condition that I had to make the decision quickly. After a short while, I called him back and said yes, unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, upon arriving and meeting the locals, I was fascinated by the small but strong skate scene in Nairobi. I started interviewing some of the locals and making some shots with my 8mm camera.
We built a 650 square meter park in 18 days, and even though it was completely d.i.y., so to say, and took place in one of the poorest countries of the world, we manged to finish with a high quality product even three days before the official opening. After a few collaborations with a canadian company I decided to hit the road in Canada and explore their local scene and make more tight bond between Love Skateboards and my work.
In late summer we started a very special project in the basement of our store in Cologne. We had that space of approximately 60 square meters and thought of building a little bowl area down there. We had small experience from our DIY projects in Berlin, Münster and Wuppertal. But this project was special.
