Starting in San Diego, hardened by the nexus of skateboarding’s emergence in the late 1950s, to Freiburg, where the virus had spread by the late 1970s, the two artists in this exhibition managed to forge, across time and space, a twenty-five year connection related to their passion for riding a simple plank attached by metal axles to four urethane wheels.
Coincidence or maybe just Strong Reaction of my searching to see more to exchange. A few months ago I was planing to do japan tour but nothing, then tokyo happened. But something inside was telling me leave things to happen… so how I chose was to fly and stepping on the far east road… spirit of untitled family friends of friends our friends were there… and I am back to discover something from me to learn many new things. On my way to Barcelona to infiltrate as a double agent: working for a big multinational as an artist and at the same time working as photojournalist for this almighty underground skateboard magazine. Sergej Vutuc is tripping across the USA putting up photo shows and performing with Helmut Vutuc Lampshade. His traveling road show is named COINCIDENCE and the first date is Saturday, April 13th at CHIIPSSssss skate shop in Detroit. He’s been shooting on the streets this last week and on alternate days spending hours in the darkroom huffing fixer until his brain is exposing his photographic visions onto paper. Regensburg is a city located in southern Germany known more for its medieval city center and less for its relatively small but close knit skate scene. Winter can be long and ugly around here and until 2012, the usual place for some of the best winter-sessions was Markus’ flat, which he turned into a skater’s wet dream.
Every year, the Projet45 guys try to find fun ideas to raise money for their DIY project and it’s not really easy to keep people interested. Most of the skateboarders out there are often multi-talented; when they are not on wheels, they are playing music, drawing, painting etc. Then came the idea to use the talent of our great concrete soldiers’ by doing an Art Show in Montreal, which could be an excuse to raise money, and have fun with the bros in the meantime.
I discovered the works of Redwood City based artist, Nicky Gaston the year of 2007 in skate works through some close friends of Jason Strubing and mine. I became really interested in him not just as a skateboarder, but learning that he had more talents than one. He was not just a skateboarder, but also a skateshop manager as well as an artist. When I skate with him he seems to barge everything and give it his all. Its like he does that with everything and has amazing energy that people can feed off of.
