Greifi Pool Bash 2024
Eric Hobsbawm, the Marxist historian, coined the term “invention of tradition” to point out how nations construct their own history to legitimize themselves. Greifswalder DIY is far from nationalistic thinking, but we definitely want to start a new tradition, a hedonistic tradition of pool parties. The Greifi Pool turned one year old this summer (check out the opening party article on confuzine.com) and we celebrated it with a big bash. Stuff for tricks and everyone – doesn’t matter what size, wheels, gender, or skills – was welcome to shred. People showed up and contributed their best.
The challenges were to skate the brand new death box then to do a trick over the lamp and the deathbox in one move and later we attached the ladder to let them do whatever with it and they went nuts. After the skate-bash, the surf rockers Poolhead turned the pool into a shaking bowl. One and a half years ago they played in front of the Search & Destroy shop to collect donations for the pool build and now they played as the first band in the pool they helped fund. The circle closes. Thanks to all the helping hands and ripping feet.
PS: Did I mention that the pool was filled with water the next day?
Be part of our new tradition for next year’s celebration, and don’t forget your swimsuits. – René Haack
