Beton Fiesta 2024 – a DIY Festival at Skatepark Näfels in Glarus, Switzerland

People from all over Europe gathered to break down old features and build new ones, all on a voluntary basis, appreciating the beautiful place and its community. The area is surrounded by grassy hills and trees. JP runs the kitchen, while a group of others work day and night to create new DIY spots. That’s the Habash crew—a bunch of big-hearted idiots keeping their home alive and fun.

They’re also inviting to the Beton Fiesta 2024, a two-day festival celebrating new spots and features at the skatepark. Well, the weather — as usual — messed up plans on Friday, with almost horizontal rain. Saturday, it’s cloudy but dry. A lineup of local bands plays right at the Bowl, setting the skate sessions across the area on fire. A guy tries a BS flip indy grab. A few people freak out over a scooter kid doing backflips. It’s so casually random that everyone somehow fits into the scene. Nothing to prove, just the freedom to enjoy. There’s lots of laughter, cold beers, and impressive skateboarding — lasting late into the night and ending with a mad rave. “The best part was probably the pool party on Sunday. We might even set up a cocktail bar for next year,” says Gian.

A DIY festival in Glarus, hosted by Habash Skate. Supported by Doodah, El Tony, Adlerbräu, Word Skateboards, Ufobar, Hösli AG, Kanton Glarus.

When Felix asked me to write something about the annual DiY party I was unsure. I was only there at daylight, making preparations to fill a cast with a new cement substitute, and only heard of what had happened at night. It’s definitely a place to be for DiY heads and I really appreciate the hospitality of the local Habash skate crew. But other than that? What should I write that could be of interest? It’s ‘just’ one of those great skate feasts where you build new ramps for a week and then skate them all together on the weekend – bands and a filled pool on Sunday included. That’s when I got Felix notes. They described all the extras you need to know and I had something to do: a translation exercise and introduction to a Swiss accent for all you language nerds. – Alan Maag
